Additive Manufacturing Standards

Why International Standards in Additive Manufacturing Matter

As you innovate and push the technological envelope, international standards in additive manufacturing serve as both a guide and a safety net. They provide a framework that integrates new advancements and methodologies, ensuring that your innovations are not only groundbreaking but also scalable, replicable, and globally accepted.

In a discipline where precision, consistency, and innovation are paramount, international standards are the tools that empower us to create, collaborate, and revolutionize with confidence.

The ASTM International Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence is a collaborative partnership among ASTM—and its 30,000 members—and representatives from government, academia, and industry that conducts strategic R&D to advance standards across all aspects of additive manufacturing which will accelerate the development and adoption of robust, game-changing technologies.

Maintaining High Standards in Additive Manufacturing

As the technology around additive manufacturing continues to mature and find applications across diverse sectors, from aerospace to healthcare, the significance of international standards becomes increasingly evident.

The global nature of modern supply chains means that components produced using additive manufacturing in one country might very well end up as integral parts of products in another. In such a scenario, international standards play a crucial role in ensuring interoperability and compatibility across borders.

Gain easy access to additive manufacturing standards with ASTM Compass. With up-to-date standards available anytime and anywhere with an internet connection, you can save valuable time and resources. With the ability to download and print PDF standards, you can work even when offline.

Additive Manufacturing Global Workshops

Snapshot workshops are intended to provide a general understanding about the entire additive manufacturing value chain covering different elements in additive manufacturing processes, additive manufacturing application across various industries, the gaps exists in additive manufacturing standardization, and research needs to fill those gaps.

Snapshot workshops are conducted twice in a year in conjunction with ASTM F42 standard committee meetings. This workshops are led key experts from Industry and academia, and also serves as a platform for the discussions on latest standard development activities.

Workshops are open to all additive manufacturing professionals, including industry (aerospace, medical, automotive, energy, and defense), academia, and government agency representatives who want to learn about the latest additive manufacturing standardized practices and the research and development initiatives in additive manufacturing qualification.

Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence

Through the Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence’s Research to Standardization initiative, research priorities are identified by the top minds in the field and are matched from the start to the standards that need to be generated to ensure the resulting additive manufacturing technology’s success.

Under the leadership of the R&D team, the Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence’s partners and R2S Collaborators plan and conduct coordinated R&D projects, prioritized annually, and targeted to expedite the additive manufacturing standards needed to address the most critical gaps in the additive manufacturing ecosystem.

Since its inception in 2018, the Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence has launched over 30 R&D projects to accelerate additive manufacturing standardization. Led by our partners and R2S collaborators, these projects seek to generate technical data required for development of consensus-based standards by ASTM committees such as F42.

International Conference on Additive Manufacturing

The ASTM International Conference on Advanced Manufacturing (ASTM ICAM) is hosted by the ASTM International Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE) and supported by more than a dozen ASTM technical committees. Some of the supporting government organizations include the FAA, NASA NIST, U.S. Department of Defense and U.S. FDA.

This conference addresses application specific requirements of various industry sectors in addition to covering the fundamentals of AM process chain. Industry, academia, and government agency professionals in the AM community are invited to address the current and future state of:

  • Industry standards
  • Design principles
  • Qualification and certification
  • Innovations in the industry
  • Materials and processes
  • Materials of interest include metals, polymers, composites, electronics, ceramics, and other related feedstocks.
  • Data management, sharing, analysis and beyond
